Winter is ending

The spring appears to be here and we’re seeing good catches of Roach and Rudd on the pole and float. The bigger fish are still more elusive but there have been a few Carp in the 14/16lb region caught in the last couple of weeks.

We’ve planted a hedge around Scroggins Lake and hopefully that will be big enough in the next couple of years to keep the marsh winds off - in the meanwhile, you may well need a well tyed down brolly to do the job.

We’ll try and put weekly updates on the blog throughout the year. If you have anything to report/comment on you can add your comments or email us.

 Happy fishing in 2008.

72 lb winning catch

Due to a cancellation on another lake the Wantsum Club came to Scroggins as an alternative venue. Most had a very good day despite the weather and the winning catch of 72lb by Graham was an excellent result. Well done Graham.

The 16lb Silver Koi was caught at Scroggins during the week which gave the catcher a bit of a surprise. There have also been some good sized Tench caught.

We hope to get another 5 swims in and completed next week. Only 20 to go then.

There have been plenty of double figure carp out on the Old Lake

Good fishing.

Stewart catches big tench.

New member Stewart had a good day on Scroggins catching three of our newly stocked tench in one afternoon - the biggest being 8lbs 4ozs. He enjoyed it so much he came back the next day with his son and caught another big tench among some smaller carp, roach and rudd.

We’ve got the banger gun going every half hour which, although a bit annoying, does keep the cormorants off. We have a cormorant on the Old Lake that seem to be quite at home with human presence which is a bit worrying. Please try and scare it off whenever possible.

Happy fishing……

Successful competitions and a new fish

New Carp

Last week saw two successful matches on Scroggins Lake.

The first was a 3 hour evening match when we hosted the Wantsum Fishing Club. The winning catch was an excellent 33lbs which represents over 10lbs of fish per hour. The second match was arranged through the sandwich Tackle Shop. Despite it being fathers day there was a reasonable turn out and the winning weight was 33.5lbs. Everyone who fished in this match had good catches ans Scroggins Lake seems to be fulfilling our expectations of it as a match venue.

Last Wednesday we added a new 25lb Common Carp to the Old Lake. It is in prime condition and very dark in colour - it’s in there all you have to do now is catch it! At the same time, we also added 20 new Tench to Scroggins - they are between 4 & 6lbs. Two have been caught already this week.

Phil has a good day

19lb Mirror CarpPhil caught 6 fish over 10lbs the biggest being a beautiful 19lb 4oz Mirror Carp

Barbel caught

Despite the foul weather on a couple of days this week there have been some interseting catches. At least 3 Carp over 19lbs and a couple of Barbel. We put the Barbel in 18 months ago at about half a pound and the two that were caught this week were over two lbs each so they’re in there and getting bigger. No big Tench this week but a couple of double figure ‘ghosties’.

Scroggins is teeming with fry which is good to see, especially as the water is so ‘new’. No doubt most will be eaten by the Perch we’ve put in but a good few will survive for the future. The Cormorants have re-appeared so we’ve re-set the ‘banger’ to every half hour. Sorry about the noise but we need to protect the fish stocks for the future.

We have a few small matches this month but they won’t affect your ability to fish on either lake so just turn up as ususal. We’re going to try and arrange for some members’ Matches in the next few weeks so we’ll be letting you know when they will be taking place.

‘Photos of your catches are always welcome and I’ll try and get them on the web ASAP and on the notice board at the Old Lake.

Happy fishing…..
